Printable: If Someone Threatens to Share an Image

A calm, one-page plan for teens and parents if someone online threatens to share a private image. Updated October 25, 2026.

To print: press Ctrl+P (Windows) or Command+P (Mac), or choose Print from your browser’s menu.

You are not in trouble. You are not alone. This can be stopped.

Threatening to share someone’s private images is a crime. The person doing it is to blame, not you.

Do this

  1. Don’t pay and don’t send anything more. Paying usually leads to more demands.
  2. Save the evidence: screenshots of messages, usernames and links.
  3. Block and report the account on the app.
  4. Tell a trusted adult today.
  5. Report it to the NCMEC CyberTipline: report.cybertip.org or 1-800-843-5678.
  6. Get images removed: takeitdown.ncmec.org helps remove images of anyone who was under 18.

For parents

  • Stay calm and thank your child for telling you.
  • Don’t take away their phone as punishment. It teaches them not to tell you next time.
  • If your child is in danger or talks about self-harm, call 911, or call or text 988.
