Signs it’s a scam

  • You weren’t expecting it, or didn’t sign up for texts.
  • A small fee to deliver a package or pay a toll.
  • “Your account will be closed” or “returned in 24 hours.”
  • A link that isn’t the company’s real website.
  • A request for a code, password or card number.

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service says USPS tracking texts only come if you asked for them, and they don’t contain links.

Report it, then delete it

  • Forward the text to 7726 (SPAM).
  • Fake USPS texts: email spam@uspis.gov.
  • Other scams: ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

If you tapped it

  • Entered card details? Call your bank now.
  • Entered a password? Change it, starting with email.
  • Shared your Social Security number? Go to IdentityTheft.gov.
