Printable: Fake Tech Support Pop-Up Card

Tape this next to the computer. It tells you exactly what to do when a scary warning or a “tech support” call appears. Updated October 25, 2026.

To print: press Ctrl+P (Windows) or Command+P (Mac), or choose Print from your browser’s menu.

A pop-up says your computer is infected and shows a phone number

It’s a scam. Don’t call the number.

  1. Close the browser. If it won’t close, restart the computer.
  2. Don’t let anyone connect to your computer remotely.
  3. Don’t pay for “repairs” by gift card, crypto, wire or payment app.

Someone calls saying they’re from Microsoft, Apple or your internet provider

Hang up. Real tech companies don’t call out of the blue about viruses. If you’re worried, call the company on a number from its official website or your bill.

If you already let them in or paid

  • Turn off the internet and run your security software, or ask someone you trust to check the computer.
  • Call your bank or card company about any payment.
  • Change passwords from a different device, starting with email.
  • Report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
