PlayStation Privacy Policy Review
This review explains the Sony Interactive Entertainment Privacy Policy for PlayStation in plain language for parents and players. It was checked on October 28, 2026, against Version 10 (August 2026). This is not legal advice.
Primary source: PlayStation Privacy Policy. In the Americas, the controller is Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC.
Snapshot
- Sony may share data about your PlayStation activity for targeted ads on other services. There is an opt-out form.
- Personal information may be used for “developing and training artificial intelligence and machine learning models.”
- Anyone below the age of majority uses a Child Family Member Account created by a parent.
- Gameplay recordings are collected, and voice communications may be monitored for moderation.
- Location is inferred from your IP address.
What they collect
Sony collects account, purchase and device data, plus “recordings of on-screen gameplay, in-game actions, menu navigation.” Voice communications may be monitored under its moderation section. It may use your IP address to show content relevant to your location. The policy does not mention camera or biometric data.
Who gets the data
The policy says Sony does not take payment for sharing data, but “may share data about your activities related to PlayStation services” for targeted advertising. You can opt out with the form at playstation.com/en-us/legal/third-party-ads/ or by emailing sie-privacy@sony.com from the address on your account.
Easy to miss
- The third-party ad opt-out is a separate form, not just a console setting.
- Voice transcription collection is a choice you can turn off.
New technology
Sony lists AI and machine learning training among its uses of personal information. For voice, the policy describes a choice to “collect voice transcription (excluding spoken voice).” It does not say spoken voice trains AI.
Kids and families
A parent or guardian must create accounts for users below the age of majority. “The Family Manager Account can control your experience,” including what others can see and which games can be played. Our PlayStation parental controls guide shows the settings.
Older adults
Sony’s real privacy contacts are ps-support.playstation.com/s/consumer-privacy and 1-800-345-7669. Sony says it may refuse a request if it cannot verify your identity, so a caller offering to fix your account for a fee is not Sony.
What you can turn off
- Turn off personalized advertisements and personalized purchase recommendations in account settings.
- Submit the third-party ads opt-out form.
- Turn off voice transcription collection and limit device data collection.
- Limit sharing of social information and shared content.
What this means for you
PlayStation gives you many switches, but the defaults allow ad sharing and AI training. If that matters to you, spend five minutes in account settings and send the opt-out form.
Does PlayStation use my data to train AI?
The policy lists developing and training AI and machine learning models among its uses of personal information.
