What they collect
eBay collects account, listing, purchase and device data, “location and geolocation data, including your general location data,” and in some cases biometric data to identify you or verify your age.
Who gets the data
Buyers and sellers see what they need to complete a sale. eBay personalizes ads. The sections we read did not say plainly whether eBay sells personal data.
Easy to miss
- Your listings and purchases may feed eBay’s generative AI, not only public web data.
- Ad preferences and communication preferences are in different places.
New technology
“When training, testing, and improving generative AI models, we rely primarily on publicly available data.” eBay says some users can object in their AI preferences settings. The sections read did not make clear whether U.S. users have that option.
Kids and families
“Under our User Agreement, children are not permitted to use our Services.”
Older adults
Keep every eBay deal on eBay. A buyer who wants to pay by check or move to text messages is a common fake check scam. eBay’s privacy requests go through its Privacy Contact page.
What you can turn off
- Use eBay Advertising Preferences (AdChoice) to turn off personalized ads.
- Check AI preferences in your account settings, if offered.
- In My eBay, change Communication Preferences.

eBay trains AI mostly on public data, but your listings and purchases can be part of it. Check the ad and AI preferences in your account.
