Netflix Privacy Policy Review
This review explains the Netflix Privacy Statement in plain language for families. It was checked on October 28, 2026, against the version last updated April 10, 2026. This is not legal advice.
Primary source: Netflix Privacy Statement. The Netflix company responsible for your data depends on where you live, and is listed at netflix.com/legal/corpinfo.
Snapshot
- Some Netflix marketing and ad activity “may be considered ‘selling’ or ‘sharing’/targeted advertising” under some state laws. You can opt out.
- Netflix honors Global Privacy Control signals.
- Each profile has a Behavioral Advertising setting. Turning it off gives you non-behavioral ads on the ad plan.
- Netflix says: “We do not engage in Behavioral Advertising on Kids profiles.”
- The statement does not mention AI or machine learning training.
What they collect
Netflix collects account and payment details, what you watch and how, and device identifiers. Location comes from IP addresses, which give “the general location of your device.” Voice inputs, including transcripts and recordings, are collected when you use voice features.
Who gets the data
Ad-plan members see ads, and Netflix’s marketing and ad activity can count as a sale or share under some state laws. The opt-out is the “Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information” link in the netflix.com footer, or netflix.com/dnsspi.
Easy to miss
- The Behavioral Advertising switch is set per profile. Change it on every adult profile, not just yours.
- Turning it off does not remove ads on the ad plan. It makes them non-behavioral.
- “Matched Identifier Communications” is a separate setting for marketing that uses your matched identifiers.
New technology
The statement does not mention artificial intelligence, machine learning or generative AI training.
Kids and families
Under-18s may use Netflix only “with the involvement, supervision, and approval” of a parent or guardian. Kids profiles get no behavioral ads, and parental controls are available. Our Netflix parental controls guide shows how to set ratings and profile locks.
Older adults
Fake “your Netflix payment failed” emails and texts are common. Netflix lists its real privacy contact as privacy@netflix.com, and your data copy at netflix.com/account/getmyinfo. Sign in by typing netflix.com yourself, never through a link in a message.
What you can turn off
- Turn off Behavioral Advertising in each profile’s Privacy and data settings.
- Use the Do Not Sell or Share link, or turn on Global Privacy Control in your browser.
- Change Notification settings for emails and texts, and the Matched Identifier Communications setting.
- Reset the advertising ID on your devices.
What this means for you
Netflix is clear and gives real choices. Kids profiles are protected from behavioral ads. On the ad plan, adults should switch off Behavioral Advertising per profile and use the sale or share opt-out.
Does Netflix sell my data?
