Spotify Privacy Policy Review
This review explains the Spotify Privacy Policy in plain language for families. It was checked on October 28, 2026, against the version effective July 1, 2026. The separate notices for Spotify Kids and Managed Accounts were not opened. This is not legal advice.
Primary source: Spotify Privacy Policy. The data controller named is Spotify USA Inc.
Snapshot
- Tailored advertising may be what some states call “sharing or selling” for cross-context behavioral advertising. The Tailored Ads setting turns it off.
- Spotify honors the Global Privacy Control signal.
- Personal data is used for “development and training of algorithmic and machine learning models.” No specific opt-out is described.
- Voice data is collected only if you use a voice feature. Precise location is used only with your permission.
- Children under the minimum age should use a Managed Account or Spotify Kids, which have their own notices.
What they collect
Spotify collects account details, listening history and device data. Voice data means “audio recordings of your voice,” collected only when you use a voice feature. “Spotify will only use your precise location data with your permission.”
Who gets the data
Spotify does not say it sells data in the ordinary sense, but says tailored ads may count as sharing or selling under some state laws. Followers can see what you listen to unless you change the Social settings.
Easy to miss
- Listening activity can be visible to followers. A teen’s late-night playlist is not as private as it feels.
- This policy does not apply to Managed Accounts or Spotify Kids, except where their own notices say so.
New technology
Spotify lists training “algorithmic and machine learning models” as a use of personal data. Recommendations and AI features are built on listening data. No opt-out specific to training is described.
Kids and families
Each country has a minimum age. Spotify recommends “asking a parent or guardian to create a Managed Account for you, where available.” Turn on the Explicit Content filter for younger listeners.
Older adults
Fake “your Premium payment failed” emails are a common trick. Spotify’s real privacy contact is privacy@spotify.com, and you can download your data from the Account Privacy page.
What you can turn off
- Turn off Tailored Ads in Privacy settings.
- In Social settings, choose whether to share what you listen to with followers.
- Turn on the Explicit Content filter for children.
- Deny precise location and microphone permissions unless you use those features.
What this means for you
Spotify’s main switch is Tailored Ads. Training on listening data has no off switch in the policy, so the useful step is to limit what Spotify can collect in the first place.
Does Spotify use my data to train AI?
The policy says personal data is used for developing and training algorithmic and machine learning models.
This is not legal advice. Checked October 28, 2026 against the policy effective July 1, 2026.
